@JanSz What brands of salt do you like? I am not entirely sure the brand I am using is up to snuff and I see you recommending dirty/unfiltered type salt. Thanks for any recommendations.

A dumb man's report of what a smart man says can never be fully accurate,
because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.

    Thank you BadassBlues

Meditation is one of the most natural and easy things a person can do to bring about a myriad of positive benefits. A sharper clearer mind, positive attitude, increased neurotransmitter function, adrenal health and self awareness. Being so simple it's ironic that there is so much confusion surrounding it.

Meditation is used in many religions and there are a variety of different methods. The method I use and am going to detail is very simple, and very effective. Once learned , this is as natural as breathing.

    Speaking of breathing...

    BREATHING:

This could be an entire post unto itself. Proper breathing has many health benefits, improper breathing is the cause of many health problems. An easy, comprehensive guide is here:

    http://www.selfication.com/how-to-breathe/

    PREPARING YOUR MIND:

This is where most people end up getting frustrated and quitting. You don't make yourself meditate, you let yourself meditate. Each of us has random, sometimes racing thoughts that come from nowhere, this is normal. Expect that this is going to occur during meditation. Prior to beginning, it's a good move to complete any small tasks that are pending, start with as clear of a mind as you can. Prepare yourself by doing some positive affirmation. An example (and one that I use daily) is " I am a good person and I deserve to be happy". This is something you can adopt to suit your goals. Say this aloud several times until you feel the truth in it.

Send love and positive energy to the entire planet, even those whom you have hard feelings. Say this aloud or to yourself, but mean it. You are letting go of any negative energy anyone or anything has transferred to you. This does not mean you are going to have these people over for BBQ's and sing Kumbaya around a campfire. You are letting go of any negative energy by using the power of love and forgiveness. This can be just between you and you (more on that later).

Give thanks and be sincerely grateful for what you have and who you are. If you think you have it bad, take a look at other people on this planet. We have it very good. Be sincere.

Remember a very happy place in your life, now just imagine the feeling of that happiness, not the details, just the emotion. Now close your eyes and let yourself feel that emotion. This gets much easier as time goes by as we have an innate ability to reconnect to our feelings, an emotional "memory".

You are creating an atmosphere of positive energy.

    PREPARING YOUR ENVIRONMENT:

This is YOUR space, YOUR time. Choose a space that will be uninterrupted for at least 30 minutes.

Extraneous noise can be very distracting. Personally, I use an app that has ambient sound and binaural waves. A pair of ear buds and my personal mix has me in my own happy world. The app I use is this:

    http://www.ipnossoft.com/app/relax-melodies/

My personal mix is the "dreams" theme and the "deep meditation" binaural beat. This immediately puts me in "MY SPACE". Meditation is all about YOU, reconnecting to and just being YOU.

Posture is important. The image we all see is one of a guy with his fingers touching and legs crossed. This is unnecessary, but if it gives you some positive mojo... go ahead. I sit in a chair, upright, but comfortable and hold my hands with my fingers crossed and my thumbs touching, positioned at my navel. Think of this as a circuit.

    TIME TO BEGIN MEDITATING:

This is where you will see and hear many varying opinions. For the sake of keeping things simple, here is what I do the majority of times.

I do what is known as "mantra" meditation. This is also what is taught in transcendental meditation (for $1,000.00). I have several personal mantras, but you need to find one that fits you and your intention. If you are looking for a clear mind, you may consider "clarity".

Close your eyes. Breathe deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth several times. This is called a "cleansing breath". Begin breathing normally through your nose as was expressed in the link above regarding proper breathing.

Relax, let your mind relax. As thoughts come and go, simply do not acknowledge them. Focus on your breathing. Keep your posture upright, but comfortable. Begin silently (in your mind) saying your mantra. There is no steadfast rule here, say it (think it) as many or as few times as you need.

Thoughts are going to happen, let your mind go and simply pay no attention. After some time they will settle and you will notice that there is space, periods of time between the thoughts. This space is where you want to be. It gets easier and easier the more you meditate to stay in this space. After a while It becomes so familiar you actually begin there.

Your intention is to be in this space, be present, be you. Let yourself feel the positive energy that surrounds you. You are not looking to space out or hallucinate, you are simply letting you be you and be present.

Do this twice a day for at least 20 minutes. Don't let yourself get frustrated, just like any other exercise it takes time to progress.

@JanSz Thank you for the write-up/details. This is something I have struggled with but, I haven't given myself enough time to practice. Thanks for the motivation and info!

Edit: Thanks to @BadassBlues for the write-up, didn't see the original thread :)

    What is Gravitational Lensing?

    Image: physicsforme.wordpress.com

This chart shows the total mass-energy content of the Universe. Mass-energy equivalence means that we can equate the two; mass is just a measure of the internal energy content of an object. All the 'regular' matter in the Universe – the stuff that makes up galaxies, planets, stars, nebulae, dust, rocks and gas – is known as baryonic matter, and only makes up 4% of the mass-energy content of the Universe. The other two pieces of the pie are dark matter and dark energy, and together they make up almost all of the known Universe. Dark energy and dark matter are so named because cosmologists don't know what they actually are – we can't see them directly and can only infer their existence by the effect they have on the regular matter that we can see. It might seem strange to claim that most of the Universe is invisible and unknown to us, but the evidence for these mysterious entities is compelling. To learn more about dark matter and dark energy, follow the links on the left hand side.

When astronomers refer to lensing, they are talking about an effect called gravitational lensing. Normal lenses such as the ones in a magnifying glass or a pair of spectacles work by bending light rays that pass through them in a process known as refraction, in order to focus the light somewhere (such as in your eye).

Gravitational lensing works in an analogous way and is an effect of Einstein's theory of general relativity – simply put, mass bends light. The gravitational field of a massive object will extend far into space, and cause light rays passing close to that object (and thus through its gravitational field) to be bent and refocused somewhere else. The more massive the object, the stronger its gravitational field and hence the greater the bending of light rays - just like using denser materials to make optical lenses results in a greater amount of refraction.

    Why is lensing useful?

Gravitational lensing is useful to cosmologists because it is directly sensitive to the amount and distribution of dark matter. This is because the amount of light bending is sensitive only to the strength of the gravitational field it passes through*, which is mostly generated by the mass of the dark matter in the Universe. This means that to measure the amount of lensing on a patch of sky, we don't need to know anything about what kind of galaxies we are observing, how they form and behave or what colour light they emit. This makes gravitational lensing a very clean and reliable cosmological probe as it relies on few assumptions or approximations.

Lensing can therefore help astronomers work out exactly how much dark matter there is in the Universe as a whole (the fraction of the pie chart at the top of the page that dark matter takes up), and also how it is distributed. An example dark matter map constructed from CFHTLenS data is shown below.

*In fact, this is one way in which gravitational lensing differs from optical lensing, as gravitational lensing is independent of the wavelength (colour) of the light. All light rays are bent the same amount by gravity. Optical lenses cause light of different colours to bend by varying amounts in a process called diffraction, resulting in the splitting of light into rainbows. There is no such analogous effect with gravitational lensing.

    Josh (Paleo Osteo)

very good outline. just finished a few articles to a similar theme. makes a lot of sense looking back at my melatonin labs from winter:

more stress = more cortisol = gut mediated effects = more serotonin = more melatonin :/

(chronic stress must be the problem, acutely stress would trash melatonin in place of cortisol)

if what we are saying regarding dreams is correct -> more melatonin -> less "deep sleep" and more REM/dreamstate

interestingly peat had a cite about childhood trauma/stress in utero or in infancy which made me revert instantly to my traumatic birth

must find a pic of day 2 after birth, i was bruised black and blue due to mothers anteverted coccyx which they had to break off to get me out....many infantile pics i am the poster child for cortisol, massive moon face, puffy etc

@JanSz This is interesting. I too had a rather stressful delivery when I was in utero. I had inhaled fecal matter and had to have my lungs pumped once delivered. I wonder if this leaves one more sensitive to stress/cortisol later in life?
